Help Strengthen and Protect Child Nutrition Assistance Programs

Feeding children is a critical part of the mission of the Food   Bank  for Westchester. Thanks to our children’s  programs, in 2015 37,000 BackPacks of food  providing 259,0 00 meals (7 meals/bag) were distributed to 2,884 hungry kids, and 184,000 meals were served at 10 Kids Cafes before and after school. These programs, along with the school lunch and school breakfast programs, are critical to helping children receive the consistent nutrition they need to lead healthy lives, learn and grow into healthy adults.

Unfortunately, too many children are unable to take advantage of these programs. Child Nutrition legislation will be federally reauthorized this year and Congress has the opportunity to make these programs better by improving access to them beyond the school day and improving the
quality of the school meals.

As member of the Feeding America network, FB4W is working to pass a stronger Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) bill in Congress. At the time of this writing, the bill has not been passed by the House of Representatives.

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) strongly opposes this bill because its would result in countless children no longer being able to access the nutritious meals they need for their health and learning, and the meals children could still obtain would be less healthy.
