Your legacy can help ensure that no one in Westchester goes hungry.  Here are five things you can do.

  1. Prepare a will.  With a will you can control the assets you wish to pass along. Include a charitable bequest in your will. Your bequest can be an outright gift of money or property, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after gifts to your family
  2. Use your retirement plan. Fill out a simple change of beneficiary form. Name the Food Bank for Westchester as the beneficiary of your tax deferred IRA, 401(K), 403(B) retirement plan. Whatever remains at the time of your death, benefits hunger relief.
  3. Use your bank accounts. A change of beneficiary form can name the Food Bank for Westchester as the beneficiary of your checking and/or savings accounts. Again, the money remains yours during your lifetime. Leverage your life insurance policy. You can name a charity as beneficiary of all or part of your policy proceeds.
  4. Help yourself, your loved ones and the Food Bank for Westchester. See your attorney about your legacy, and then let us know so we can thank you.
  5. Include The Food Bank for Westchester in your year end tax strategy. A year-end gift to the Food bank for Westchester of cash or stocks can significantly reduce your income taxes while performing meaningful support to the Food Bank for Westchester.

Engage Legal Counsel
Most experts agree that hiring an attorney with experience in estate planning will save you and your beneficiaries time and money in the long run. While you determine what goes into your will or trust, your attorney will make sure it is a proper legal statement of how you wish your possessions to be distributed.  If you would prefer the Food Bank for Westchester can direct you to attorneys that can assist you in your planned giving efforts and answer any questions that you may have.  A gift is best made with the counsel of one's legal, tax and/or financial advisor.
