Winter 2018 Quarterly Update

A Letter from our President & CEO

Hello There!

I am so grateful and pleased to report that thanks to the generosity of our donors we distributed more meals through the end of December, than ever before.

To some it is still a surprise to learn that hunger exists in every community in Westchester- but it does. We all have neighbors who are hungry. Our mission is to feed those who are hungry and for this we rely on your support.

This year’s strong donor support provided food assistance to struggling families, Kids BackPacks to children who return to homes lacking food, meals to seniors on fixed incomes choosing between medication and nutrition, and fresh produce to those who otherwise wouldn’t have it. Donor support helped feed our neighbors who are hungry in every community throughout Westchester.

Fall was especially active at the Food Bank for Westchester. Our donors enabled us to provide wonderful holiday meals - including turkeys and chickens to 2,600 families, and overall we distributed 6,500 turkeys. Our community partners, Balducci, Whole Foods, ShopRite and Simon Malls helped us raise awareness of hunger, and funds to help fight it. In the last 6 months, we:

  • Recovered almost 2 million pounds of nutritious food from area retailers and wholesalers helping to keep food out of landfills AND helping to feed our neighbors who are hungry.
  • Distributed 4.5 million lbs. of food, or 3.8 million meals, including holiday meals and turkeys, to help families who are hunger enjoy a holiday meal.
  • Dramatically reduced the cost to source produce enabling us to provide 4 TIMES as much produce.

We look forward to an equally busy and productive spring. With the generosity of an extraordinary donor, we will be expanding our fleet of refrigerated trucks to 7. March will bring an exciting announcement from the Food Bank – good news for us and of great interest to you, our Donors. And, our annual spring gala will be held on April 13th. It will celebrate our 30th year of fighting hunger in Westchester.

From the Food Bank staff and the clients we serve, a heartfelt thank you.
