The BackPack Program is designed to help alleviate child hunger by providing hungry and at-risk children with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food on weekends and school vacations.
Each BackPack has 8-10 meals and includes; protein, milk, fruit, grain and vegetables. In the BackPack we also include a recipe in English and Spanish or nutrition information.
Being very aware that children receiving BackPacks likely will share the food with siblings and other family members, care is taken to pack food items that can be easily shared and/or can contribute to a family meal.
There are 25,000 grade school children in the public school system in Westchester County that qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The Food Bank for Westchester currently conducts the BackPack Program every other week in the following communities and includes school districts, day care centers and community centers:
|# of children served monthly||1,296|
|# of sites participating||54|
|# of bags distributed||27,646|
|# of meals served (9 meals/bag, x # of bags||248,814|
