The “ Prison Farm “ was designed
to cultivate unused land to grow fresh food for
hungry Westchester residents and at the same
time train participating inmates in basic “nursery “skills.
The project is collaboration between the Food
Bank, the Department of Corrections, with assistance
from the Department of Parks and Recreation including
Muscoot Farm, BOCES and Cornell Cooperative Extension
of Westchester.
In 2005-2006, the first year
out the “prison
Farm” produced 3,000 pounds of produce. Under
the able leadership of the project coordinator
Agriculturist Leonard Laurencine in the 2006-2007
fiscal year the “prison farm” will
produce 10,000 pounds of fresh food.
